Abstract
The paper outlines a conceptual architecture that adapts the open–systems approach to integrate knowledge bases in expert system shells. To facilitate application of the open–systems approach, a general framework for open–systems development called an open intelligent information systems architecture is utilised. Vp–expert software is considered to outline the general structure of an open–systems based expert system shell environment. A prototype case is used to demonstrate the working of the environment.
