Abstract

The ' Book of Wazirs ' of Jahshiyarl is one of our most important texts on the early history of Islamic bureaucracy. In this volume Dr. Latz offers the first translation into a European language of part of this work, covering the period of the patriarchal and Umayyad Caliphs. The often elliptical narratives of Jahshiyarl have been provided with cross-references to other sources where fuller versions are found, as well as with brief but useful annotations on persons, places, and incidents mentioned. A fifty-page introduction discusses the author, the book, the diwan, and the secretaries.
