Abstract

In the current period, nearly three-fourths of federal expenditures, more than $700 million in 1963, support research performed for the federal government through grants or contracts to other performers, predominantly universities and other nonprofit institutions. About onefourth, or $250 million in 1963, finances research in federal installations. Of the $700 million in grants for 1963, educational and other nonprofit institutions will receive $600 million; about $75 million will finance research in industry; and investigators in foreign countries will receive almost $35 million for research supported by U.S. agencies.
