Abstract:A young friend went to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn earlier this summer. It was his first time on an American beach, and I'd hyped the experience up to him. "How was it?" I asked a few days later. "Amazing," he said. He talked about the subway ride to the beach, the concession stands, the cold water. "A plane flew over our heads while we were there," he said. "It was trailing a banner that said, 'Have hope.'" That sounds nice, I thought. Who among us doesn't need hope these days? He continued: "It said, 'Have Hope. Keep Faith. Say No to Abortion.'"
