Abstract
The gloss of a manufactured surface can be used as a measure for its roughness. This method has the advantage that it is a non-contact measurement and refers to the three dimensional surface. Although this method has been known for a long time, it is currently being tried out for eventual roughness measurements for the adaptive control of machine tools. Various factors affecting the gloss and its relationship with the conventional roughness values are given.
