Abstract
A review of articles and monographs on metamaterials are fulfilled in this paper in order to summarize the main types of artificial composites, depending on a sign of a permittivity and permeability. The classification of basic metamaterial structures for microwave applications with their characteristic properties and features is offered. Main disadvantages of the first metamaterial structures and ways of overcoming them are examined. Main approaches to design composite metamaterial structures with double-negative material properties are summarized and their distinctive features are considered. As well, relevance and applicability of such structures in microwave engineering are discussed with giving examples of these concepts in practical applications, particularly in waveguides and antennas technologies.
