Coming out of the type box; or, what customers really want for type handling and imaging in document processing applications

Abstract

Comparison of document users' real underlying type handling and imaging requirements with the industry-supplied solutions reveals an industry-imposed nightmare for the customer. This paper suggests the real and the imposed requirements, uses Xerox as an example of a vendor odyssey moving from bitmap to outline technology and from host-based to networked printing, and discusses the challenges of next steps in satisfying the 'real requirements', including the move away from emulation of the typographer's typebox in computer-based solutions.
