Abstract
The De Gli Elementi Mechanici by Colantonio Stigliola, tough little-known, is one of most interesting treatise within the Archimedean tradition. Although inspired to the Maurolico’s De momentis Aequalibus, it was nevertheless a truly original and unique work in the history of the renaissance mechanics. For in it Stigliola not only systematically used the concept of moment, but he also introduced the new concept of equally extended body, which enabled him to consider fundamental aspects of the simple machines in a new and definitive way.
