Abstract

Basque culture and Francoist regionalism could be expressed officially during the dictatorship as long as they did not rise to the level of a political grievance or a demand that might fuel peripheral nationalism. This paper examines the cultural continuities of Basque nationalism under Francoism, with particular emphasis on the figure of the bibliophile Julio Urquijo and his relationships with Francoist institutions and figures as well as with Basque nationalists in exile.
