Abstract

This paper is written in response to the editorial of the ACMI of March 2000 ‘Midwifery Policies, Position Statements and Standards. How do we know that we meet them? It questions the differences of practice in Australia in comparison of that of the United Kingdom, where Midwives have gained and enjoy a higher level of autonomous practice. It looks at the subject of recruitment, education, standard setting and the benefits of a single governing body Australia wide, in policing the practice of Midwifery.
