Abstract
Objectives
To evaluate the roughness of the enamel surface after air-polishing.
Materials and methods
Fifteen specimens of enamel-MACOR treated with modified-Bioglass 45S5 (SS), aluminum trioxide (AO), or sodium bicarbonate (BS) were analyzed using confocal (CLSM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopy to identify profilometric and micro- and nano-roughness changes.
Results
AO-treated samples were significantly rougher (p > 0.05) than those treated with BS or SS. Surfaces treated with BS or SS were not significantly different from the untreated control surfaces (p > 0.05). AO powder produced the greatest profilometric changes, whereas BS and SS produced similar profilometric changes.
Conclusions
Air-polishing with SS or BS does not alter enamel roughness, although it may have mild profilometric effects during stain removal procedures.
