Nacida en Medellín el 28 de octubre de 1931, hija única del matrimonio del industrial Gabriel Restrepo Restrepo y doña Tulia Moreno de Restrepo. Desde la infancia mostró una gran afinidad por los microorganismos, según ella heredada de su abuelo el doctor Julio Restrepo Arango, médico dedicado al área de farmacia, quien según los relatos de la doctora Restrepo a la edad de 6 años le enseñó a observar el maravilloso mundo de los “seres pequeñitos” con el microscopio
