allowed the reconstruction of the family history and what were their limitations? Overall, more discussion of sources would have been welcome. The footnotes show an impressive range of archives and especially of local and alternative newspapers, and I would have liked to have seen some consideration of their advantages and limitations. This also might have incorporated some discussion of the representativeness of the central cast of characters—what can we know not only about the leadership but also of the ordinary farmers and workers who supported these movements, or of the ones who did not? These critiques, however, are partly and simply preferences regarding emphasis and style. Readers will find this book a fountain of information as well as a story well told.
