Abstract
Aim: The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of progressive relaxation exercise applied to hemodialysis patients on the patients' anxiety level and sleep quality. Methods: The sample of this experimental study consisted of 42 individuals who underwent hemodialysis. Data in the study; Patient Identification Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI FORM TX) and Pitssburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were collected. The experimental (n = 20) and control (n = 22) groups were determined using the simple random sampling method. Progressive Relaxation Exercise program, consisting of 4 stages, was applied to the study group. The data were collected by face-to-face interview technique. The scales were reapplied at the 6th and 8th weeks. A text message was sent to the patients in order to create and support behavioral change. Data were analyzed by means of frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation. Chi-square test, student t test and ANOVA test were used. Results: The study and control groups had similar features in terms of age, education level, gender and state- the trait anxiety anxiety level and PSQI scores (p>0.05). While there was no significant difference between a state-a trait anxiety and PSQI scores of the study and control group at the 6th week, there was a significant difference between a state- a trait anxiety and PSQI scores anxiety scores at the 8th week (p<0.05). Conclusion: As a result of the study, it was determined that the progressive relaxation exercise applied to hemodialysis patients affected the level of anxiety and sleep quality positively. Progressive Relaxation exercises reduce the anxiety levels of hemodialysis patients and increase their sleep quality.
