Previous studies have indicated the existence of physical and chemical interactions between cations and anions sites of proteins within the extracellular environment that have a specific functional importance. However, it is not well understood whether specific cations may alter the function of specific proteins. We report here the results of studies that indicate interaction of specific cations such as sodium may alter the physico-chemical action of heparin.
