In addition, there is also glucose and lipid intolerance. Adequate nutritional and metabolic support of the critically ill child under these conditions is a challenging endeavor. Traditionally, critically ill children have received nutritional requirements based on those of healthy children despite the fact that the critically ill population is physiologically and metabolically different. Furthermore, nutritional requirements in healthy children are largely based on limited data.
