Abstract

Correlation between soil characteristics and field radon measurements was studied at 20 sites in Kuwait. Soil samples were collected from the same sites and analyzed for grain size. Results show that the outdoor radon concentrations had a mean value of 8.9 Bq m−3. The radon exhalation rates ranged from 2.8 to 18.2 mBq m−2 s−1 with a mean of 9.7 mBq m−2 s−1. Radon exhalation rates were higher for dry, friable, gravelly sand soil when compared to those recorded in the wet and compacted muddy sand soil.
