Abstract
Direct electrochemical analysis of iodide anions in a Hanford off-gas condensate simulant has been studied by the cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry method. Well-developed cyclic voltammograms displaying distinguishable oxidation and reduction peaks have been obtained on gold and glassy carbon disc electrodes. The chronoamperograms are characteristic of fast current decays at short times and slow current decays at longer times. Both the cyclic voltammograms and the chronoamperograms are strongly dependent upon the concentration of iodide ions. Moreover, the voltametric peak currents and the sampled slow-decay currents exhibit good linear relationship with the concentrations. The lower detection limit of approximately 0.9 ppm iodide has been obtained on the gold electrode from the cyclic voltametric measurements. These results suggest that it is prospective to develop the electroanalytical method to measure the concentration of iodide ions in a complicated environment such as contaminated underground water and radioactive liquid wastes.
