Abstract
The correlations between clinical signs and histo-pathological features are of interest. Hence, a prospective study of 48 primary pterygia cases examined. Most patients were female, with common symptoms including redness, cosmetic concerns and astigmatism. Histology showed squamous hyperplasia, inflammation and vascular changes. Clinical redness significantly correlated with epithelial hyperplasia and lymphocytic infiltration. Data suggest some pterygia may mimic ocular surface squamous neoplasia, impacting diagnosis and treatment.
