Seven Insights Captured Along the Young Patient Journey on Navigating Health Care

Abstract

Two sisters, both in their 20s, with a chronic, disabling heart condition and grateful and contemplative attitude, discuss navigating health care. In an amusing manner, they ask us to read their faces as well as their charts; gain trust with truth; understand they lie; treat them like experts, yet treat them like children; explain the all-too-often patient path; and beg not to have to battle the system. Their patient journey started with a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, diagnosis in high school. They have created an internationally recognized, multi-award-winning support, advocacy, and education organization with a core community of over 14,000 members.
