Take proactive steps to prevent, address hazing

Abstract

Within the college sports world, hazing has traditionally been viewed as a rite of passage, a way of indoctrinating the newer team members into the so-called club. However, hazing is a form of abuse that's typically perpetrated by the older, more experienced student-athletes, and sometimes the coaching staff, to humiliate newer and younger teammates in front of their peers. It's actually bullying that takes advantage of the inherent power dynamic between the upper-class student-athletes and the freshmen, together with others on the team who are perceived as having a “lower social status.”
