The application of the show mine assessment model on underground mining heritage and mine tourism in Switzerland

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive assessment of underground mining heritage and mine tourism in Switzerland, highlighting the significance of mines not only as sources of valuable natural resources but also as integral parts of geological heritage and cultural identity. The research focuses on ten selected show mines, analyzing their scientific and tourism potential. The assessment modelling includes a novel evaluation model, which was utilized in order to determine the unique values and future development strategies. By examining the geological, historical, socio-economic, and tourist aspects, the study underscores the importance of sustainable tourism practices and the role of mines in local community development. The findings aim to enhance the management and promotion of mine tourism in Switzerland, offering insights into the preservation of mining heritage and the enhancement of tourism experiences.
