Abstract

These days, most homes have more display screens than people. But back in 1945, TV screens were scarce. Households that did hav a TV often fought over what to watch, even though there were at best only a handful of stations to choose from. Allen B. DuMont, who pioneered the first commercial television sets in the United States, thought he had a solution: a console with side-by-side receivers and two sound systems, so that husband and wife could watch separate shows together. Sadly, DuMont's prototype never made it into production. Consumers would have to wait several decades for the proliferation of cheap screens to finally end the “what to watch” debate.
