Abstract

We herein report a novel multicomponent retrograde aldol condensation reaction for the synthesis of trisubstituted benzenes. Density functional theory calculations indicated a novel reaction mechanism with distinct selectivity that proceeds through three sequential stages: initial formation of the 2H-thiocine, subsequent conversion to the thietane, and the thietane-ring-opening process, which serves as the rate-determining step.
