Abstract
The unique functionalities of metastable-state photoacids (mPAHs) are driven by multiple isomers during a single cycle of their photoreactions. For a benzimidazole-based mPAH, these include trans, cis, spiro isomers as depicted, along with other transient species. Identification of these transient isomers necessitates an optical spectroscopic tool with high time- and frequency-resolved capabilities in combination with theoretical calculations to follow the photoinduced structural changes in real time.
