Minority groups are more likely to reside in older buildings, even when controlling for income and wealth, and thus face higher installation costs and lower future returns. Notably, the largest racial gap in building age is found among the lowest income and wealth groups. Our results indicate that income-based subsidies or policy supports are inefficient in addressing broader social inequality in heat pump adoption. Energy production, distribution, and consumption all have both technical and human components, and the latter involves the human causes and consequences of energy-related activities and processes as well as social structures that shape how people interact with energy systems. Energy analysis, therefore, needs to look beyond the dimensions of technology and economics to include these social and human elements.
