Abstract

The main goal of this review paper is to introduce the potential of MXene-based nanofillers in enhancing the corrosion protection efficiency of polymer coatings. At first glance, the pros and cons of MXene nanosheets are presented and compared with other nanofillers, and different ways of modifying the MXene-based nanosheets are considered. The modification methods are divided into three main categories including covalent or non-covalent functionalization, synthesis of nanohybrids, and co-approach of nanohybrid preparation and functionalization. Moreover, theoretical studies about anti-corrosion polymer/MXene nanocomposite coatings are presented to reveal the importance of theoretical simulations in addition to experimental results. This review will shed light on future scientific research about MXene nanosheets and their industrial application in the coating industry.
