Abstract

Monitoring volcanoes not only helps to protect people living near active volcanoes, but also provides insights into atmospheric and geological processes. Recently, drones have been increasingly used for this purpose, reducing the risk for researchers, speeding up measurements and providing unique insights into otherwise inaccessible parts of the volcanic plume. The drones are equipped with sensor systems and radio links and can thus send real-time data of the measured values to the ground station in order to enable particularly precise and spatially resolved measurements. Various sensors and absorber systems help the researchers to obtain the most accurate measurement results possible, which are later used for risk assessment and in various models.
