Abstract
This paper addresses the underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), focusing on the often-overlooked field of metrology in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. Despite LAC nations having nearly 50 % women in engineering research, metrology lags, and this study delves into the historical context, statistical representation, and current research areas within the LAC region. A survey among female researchers in metrology reveals their experiences and challenges, highlighting the role of successful women in motivating their peers. Despite a historical gender gap in engineering and science disciplines, women are increasingly present in higher education, particularly in certain fields. The paper concludes by stressing the importance of mentorship in shaping the careers of female scientists and advocates for broader research encompassing all LAC countries to foster gender diversity in metrology. The findings contribute to the ongoing dialogue on gender diversity in STEM, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to empower women in metrology and related disciplines.
