Gut microbiota metabolites can cross brain barriers, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSF) and influence neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression. In recent years, the communication between the microbiome and brain in depression has been extensively studied in humans and animal models.
