Abstract

Interferon (IFN) used in the treatment of severe viral infections and cancer can lead to acute hearing loss and balance problems. The effect of type I interferon IFNα2b on the function of the afferent glutamatergic synapse of the vestibular epithelium was studied in vitro using electrophysiological method and perfusion of the synaptic area with solutions containing glutamate (GLU) and ionotropic glutamate receptor agonists (AMPA, NMDA). IFNα2b selectively activates AMPA, but not NMDA receptors, and modulates the afferent flow from the sensory epithelium to CNS. The delayed activation of AMPA receptors is one of the mechanisms of the neuromodulatory effect of IFNα2b on glutamatergic synaptic transmission in the vestibular apparatus.
