“Transgender is an umbrella terms for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth.” So begins a valuable information piece from the American Psychological Association (APA). The word “transsexual” is outdated, according to the APA Style guide, but it should be used for an individual who claims it. “Transgender” is the more common term, and the shorthand is “trans.”
