Abstract

An interdisciplinary analysis revealed that the 2022 mpox outbreak in New York City was initiated by dozens of introductions of mpox virus into New York City. Epidemic modeling suggests that infection of highly connected individuals in a heavy-tailed sexual contact network explains the rapid rise and fall of the outbreak.
