Abstract
Spiroplasma eriocheiris, a helical, wall-less prokaryote belonging to the class Mollicutes, presents a significant threat to crustacean aquaculture. This pathogen is particularly associated with tremor disease in Eriocheir sinensis, the Chinese mitten crab, resulting in substantial economic losses. Despite being the first spiroplasma identified in crustaceans, our comprehension of S. eriocheiris pathogenesis remains incomplete. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding S. eriocheiris, focusing on its distinctive morphology and motility, the contribution of virulence factors to infectivity, and the intricate interplay between pathogen evasion strategies and host immune responses. Furthermore, we discuss advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, offering perspectives for future research directions aimed at mitigating the impact of this economically important pathogen.

Aquaculture is an international journal for the exploration, improvement and management of all freshwater and marine food resources. It publishes novel and innovative research of world-wide interest on farming of aquatic organisms, which includes finfish, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic plants for human consumption. Research on ornamentals is not a focus of the Journal. Aquaculture only publishes papers with a clear relevance to improving aquaculture practices or a potential application.
