A low energy EFT for <sup>12</sup>C(<em>α</em>,<em>γ</em>)<sup>16</sup>O at the Gamow-peak energy, <span><math><msub><mrow><mi>E</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>G</mi></mrow></msub><mo>=</mo><mn>0.3</mn></math></span> MeV, is constructed, and the theory is first applied to the study of elastic <em>α</em>-<sup>12</sup>C scattering at low energies. The effective range parameters are fitted to the precise phase shift data of the elastic scattering and the astrophysical <span><math><msub><mrow><mi>S</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>E</mi><mn>1</mn></mrow></msub></math></span> factor of the <em>E</em>1 transition of <sup>12</sup>C(<em>α</em>,<em>γ</em>)<sup>16</sup>O at <span><math><msub><mrow><mi>E</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>G</mi></mrow></msub></math></span> is estimated. For the study of the <em>E</em>2 transition of <sup>12</sup>C(<em>α</em>,<em>γ</em>)<sup>16</sup>O, we discuss a difficulty to determine the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of the subthreshold <span><math><msubsup><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow><mrow><mn>1</mn></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></math></span> state of <sup>16</sup>O from the elastic scattering data, and demonstrate the difficulty with the estimate of the astrophysical <span><math><msub><mrow><mi>S</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>E</mi><mn>2</mn></mrow></msub></math></span> factor of <sup>12</sup>C(<em>α</em>,<em>γ</em>)<sup>16</sup>O at <span><math><msub><mrow><mi>E</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>G</mi></mrow></msub></math></span>. Abstract
Study of radiative α capture on 12C, 12C(α,γ)16O, in cluster effective field theory (EFT) is reviewed. A low energy EFT for 12C(α,γ)16O at the Gamow-peak energy, MeV, is constructed, and the theory is first applied to the study of elastic α-12C scattering at low energies. The effective range parameters are fitted to the precise phase shift data of the elastic scattering and the astrophysical factor of the E1 transition of 12C(α,γ)16O at is estimated. For the study of the E2 transition of 12C(α,γ)16O, we discuss a difficulty to determine the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of the subthreshold state of 16O from the elastic scattering data, and demonstrate the difficulty with the estimate of the astrophysical factor of 12C(α,γ)16O at . We discuss the uncertainty in the estimate of the S factors at in the present approach.
