Mexican Immigration and the Decline of Transnationalism: A 30-Year Retrospective

Abstract

The migration literature has established that transnationalism between origin and destination lessens over time for international migrants. This study asks whether this decline takes place for entire towns in the country of origin and what may be the causes of the decline. Household surveys by the author in two counties in central Zacatecas state, Mexico, in 1988 and again in 2018, provide some answers. Results document a decline in transnationalism and implicate assimilation of migrants in the United States and loss of prospects in rural Zacatecas as driving forces. Also, demographic modernisation and extra-regional opportunities reduce migration and along with it, transnationalism.
