Strengthening suicide prevention policies in South Korea: Bridging the gap for adolescent mental health

Abstract

Suicide remains a global mental health crisis requiring evidence-based policy interventions. South Korea has implemented effective suicide prevention strategies, such as pesticide restrictions, emergency room follow-ups, and media safety guidelines, successfully reducing suicide rates among older adults. However, since 2017, youth suicide rates have increased, highlighting gaps in existing policies. Addressing this issue requires innovative approaches, including mental health literacy programs, digital interventions, social media regulations, and holistic mental health policies. Continuous evaluation and adaptation of suicide prevention strategies are essential. South Korea’s experience offers valuable insights, yet further efforts are needed to tackle evolving challenges in suicide prevention.
