Follow-up in coeliac disease: evidence and future challenges.

Abstract

It is estimated that Coeliac Disease has a prevalence of 1% of the global population, and many cases remain undiagnosed, either because patients do not have proper health monitoring or, conversely, due to the asymptomatic nature of the disease in some cases. Furthermore, there is no population wide screening program, although suspicion of the disease has significantly improved. Consequently, it is expected that the incidence will continue to rise in the upcoming years. With this letter, we aim to raise awareness of the imminent challenge for gastroenterologists with expertise in Coeliac Disease and the need to strengthen knowledge and follow-up of the disease in primary care for uncomplicated cases, as well as the necessity of a nutritionist.
