Abstract
The ways, in which environmental conditions affect the fire safety of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cables, are still a problem. The PVC sheaths were treated using three ways, including hygrothermal, salt spray and thermal ageing. The influence of various ageing conditions on the flame retardancy of PVC sheath was investigated by various analysis methods. The obtained results indicate that three environmental conditions have varying impacts on PVC sheaths, among which the hygrothermal environmental condition has the most unfavorable influence. Compared with the unageing PVC sheath, the cable sheath under hygrothermal environmental condition exhibits an increase by 9.7 % in total heat release, a reduction by 29.2 % in char residue, a reduction by 5.8 % in limiting oxygen index rating, and an increase by 66.3 % in maximum specific optical density. In addition, the correlation between the ageing factor and the fire-resistant degradation degree provides guidance for the maintenance of cables.
期刊介绍:
Thermochimica Acta publishes original research contributions covering all aspects of thermoanalytical and calorimetric methods and their application to experimental chemistry, physics, biology and engineering. The journal aims to span the whole range from fundamental research to practical application.
The journal focuses on the research that advances physical and analytical science of thermal phenomena. Therefore, the manuscripts are expected to provide important insights into the thermal phenomena studied or to propose significant improvements of analytical or computational techniques employed in thermal studies. Manuscripts that report the results of routine thermal measurements are not suitable for publication in Thermochimica Acta.
The journal particularly welcomes papers from newly emerging areas as well as from the traditional strength areas:
- New and improved instrumentation and methods
- Thermal properties and behavior of materials
- Kinetics of thermally stimulated processes
