Abstract
Objective: To study the parameters of regional cerebral hemodynamics in patients with alcoholism with different flexibility of cognitive functions.
Material and methods: Fifty-eight patients with alcoholism were examined. The flexibility of cognitive functions was evaluated using the Stroop test. Regional cerebral hemodynamics was assessed by 4-channel rheoencephalography (REG).
Results: It was found that 77.6% (n=45) of patients have low flexibility of cognitive processes. At physiological rest, patients with low cognitive flexibility had a significantly lower value of the rheographic index on the left and right in the carotid and vertebrobasilar basins compared with patients with a high level of cognitive flexibility (p<0.05). Also, in patients with a low level of cognitive flexibility, an asymmetry of vascular tone with higher on the right in both brain basins (p=0.079 and p=0.094) was demonstrated.
Conclusions: Regardless of the flexibility of cognitive processes, in patients with alcoholism, a hypovolemic, hyper-resistant type of cerebral hemodynamics was detected during withdrawal. In patients with a low level of flexibility of cognitive functioning, more pronounced compression effects on hemodynamics and moderate interhemispheric asymmetry of the tone of the internal carotid and vertebrobasilar arteries were observed.
