Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is becoming increasingly common, and adequate nutrition is essential in the management of this condition. Current recommendations focus mainly on reducing protein intake and managing electrolyte complications, but adopting a balanced diet rich in plant-based food and low in animal-derived proteins is increasingly associated with a slower decline in glomerular filtration rate. Other nutritional approaches, such as intermittent fasting or the ketogenic diet, have also been proposed to improve the metabolic profile and reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with CKD. In this article, we review these different dietary approaches in the context of CKD.
