Abstract

Quantum dots (QDs), a modern nanotechnology, have emerged as a transformative tool in aquaculture, enhancing efficiency and sustainability. This review highlights QD applications in detecting waterborne pathogens and pollutants through fluorescence, monitoring water quality parameters in real-time, targeted delivery of vaccines and therapeutics, and improving nutrition through nano-encapsulated feed supplements. QD’s unique optical properties enable sensitive and selective detection, while their small size facilitates cellular uptake and targeted delivery. Benefits of quantum dots in aquaculture include disease management, enhanced water quality, increased feed efficiency, and reduced environmental impact. Furthermore, recent applications of nano-inspired genes, nano-sensors, DNA-based nano-vaccines, and medication delivery systems have positively impacted fish health, immune systems, and reproduction. However, toxicity concerns and regulatory frameworks must be addressed. This comprehensive review provides an overview of QD applications in aquaculture, highlighting opportunities, challenges, and future research directions, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and efficient aquaculture industry.

期刊介绍: Aquaculture International is an international journal publishing original research papers, short communications, technical notes and review papers on all aspects of aquaculture. The Journal covers topics such as the biology, physiology, pathology and genetics of cultured fish, crustaceans, molluscs and plants, especially new species; water quality of supply systems, fluctuations in water quality within farms and the environmental impacts of aquacultural operations; nutrition, feeding and stocking practices, especially as they affect the health and growth rates of cultured species; sustainable production techniques; bioengineering studies on the design and management of offshore and land-based systems; the improvement of quality and marketing of farmed products; sociological and societal impacts of aquaculture, and more. This is the official Journal of the European Aquaculture Society.
