Abstract
Targeted radionuclide therapy began with the discovery of radioactive atoms, particularly radium, which was used to treat certain cancers. Iodine-131 has been applied since 1942 to the treatment of hyperthyroidism and is still used for imaging and treating thyroid cancer remnants and metastases. Subsequently, the development of new radionuclides, specific vectors and labeling techniques made it possible to treat both localized tumors, for instance with micro-particles for liver cancer, and disseminated or metastatic tumors, with the systemic injection of antibodies and peptides or other radiolabeled small molecular weight vectors. In this article, we will recall the developments and challenges of targeted radionuclide therapy, as well as the innovations that are advancing the treatment of cancers.
