Suicidio reciente: Inflamación y atención

Abstract

To test the hypothesis that inflammatory parameters will be elevated in a recent suicide attempt and will be associated with attentional performance, 96 participants were recruited at the Department of Psychiatry of the University Hospital Araba - Santiago, including 20 patients with a recent suicide attempt diagnosed with major depressive disorder, 33 patients with the same diagnosis with past suicide attempts, 23 patients also depressed without suicide attempts and 20 volunteers with no mental health history. The results show that both recent and past suicidal behavior is associated with elevated levels of inflammation. Elevated IL-6 concentration has a reductive impact on attentional performance, increasing the risk of suicide due to incorrect interpretation and response to environmental information.
