Numerous different biomarkers, ranging from acute phase reactants, cytokines, and inflammatory markers to omics analyses and extracellular vesicles have been assessed as potential biomarkers in burn sepsis. To date no single biomarker has proven useful as the sole indicator for sepsis. The future of burn sepsis biomarkers will likely require a panel of biomarkers from all categories.
