Using precision cut lung slices (PCLS) and air-liquid interface (ALI) airway epithelial cell cultures, the authors showed that impaired STAT3 activation in RSV-infected pediatric multiciliated cells increased cell apoptosis and viral shedding, which enhanced the spread of infection.
