Abstract

Innovation is widely acknowledged as crucial in determining a firm's survival and growth. In this article, we enhance the current understanding of business and management by identifying key characteristics and presenting a novel perspective on the antecedents and consequences of innovation performance. By analyzing a dataset of 13 841 entries from the Taiwanese Technological Innovation Survey, this research utilizes a resource-based view to support the proposed hypotheses. The empirical results demonstrate that innovation breadth and protection have direct effects on innovation capability, which, in turn, significantly impact innovation performance. This confirms the mediating role of innovation capability. Furthermore, the study investigates the moderating role of innovation barriers in the relationships among innovation breadth, protection, and capability. The theoretical and managerial implications are discussed in the final section, highlighting the relevance of these findings for both academic research and practical applications in industry.
