Several reports have indicated that canine MCTs express a mutated form of a tyrosine kinase receptor, namely KIT, that is involved in abnormal mast cell growth and differentiation. Currently, the post-surgical prognosis for MCTs is related to three different KIT immunohistochemical expression patterns.
