Abstract

Gut Microbiota Homeostasis. The homeostasis of gut microbiota plays an important role in host health. In this issue, Wenkai Ren's group found that the interactions between intestinal fungi and bacteria could affect lung inflammation during infection. The image shows the dysbiosis of gut mycobiota that induced by antifungal drugs, leading to the overgrowth of Escherichia coli (colored in orange) in gut and then “sailing” to the lung via the gut-lung axis during infection. The two islands represent the intestine and the lung respectively. After landing, Escherichia coli induces the excess accumulation of activated macrophages, which ultimately exacerbates the lung inflammation, highlighting the crucial role of gut microbiota homeostasis for host health. The cover image was designed by Youxia Wang and Wenkai Ren at South China Agricultural University, together with Paper Artist.
