Despite existing reviews targeted at enhancing knowledge of plastispheres from diverse viewpoints, research gaps remain, preventing a complete presentation of methods to early-career researchers. This review thus presents an in-depth overview of current methods for studying plastispheres, including their applications, advantages, and challenges. We take a holistic approach to cover all aspects of plastisphere research, from sampling to analysis, discussing recent advances in key tools like microscopy, fluorescence analysis, spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, and omics-based technologies, which aid in understanding the complexity of plastispheres in terms of abundance, composition, taxonomic, and functional aspects. Furthermore, we explore promising yet underutilized techniques that could drive new research directions.
